Northeast volleyball splits to begin season at RKP Invite

BEATRICE, Neb. – The Northeast Community College volleyball team opened the fall 2021 season on Friday at the RKP Invite in Beatrice, Neb., topping Coffeyville Community College in three sets, 25-11, 25-20 and 25-21. The Hawks (1-1) later fell to Labette Community College in three sets, 25-19, 25-16 and 25-21.

The Hawks managed to commit few errors in the opener against Coffeyville. Lauren Kavan (Cedar Bluffs, Neb.) recorded seven kills, 11 digs and seven ace serves. Edyn Sudbeck (Wynot, Neb.) had 24 assists, while Alexis Kapales (Jonesboro, Ark.) and Elizabeth Christensen (Stanton, Neb.) pitched in 14 digs each, respectively.

In the final match of the day, the Hawks couldn't counter with Labette and ultimately committed to many costly hitting errors. Rachel Ecklund (Overton, Neb.) tallied nine kills, while Sudbeck added 24 assists and 22 digs.

"The team played really well today," head coach Amanda Schultze said. "We saw some great things out of them. We are a very young at the net and there is still a lot of growing to do, but we had a good start to the season today."

The Hawks square off with Highland Community College at 1 p.m. tomorrow, followed by a match with Cloud County Community College at 5 p.m. in Beatrice.
