ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The No. 17 Northeast Community College women's soccer team took on No. 15 Pearl River Community College and No. 3 Holmes Community College on Friday and Sunday in St. Louis, Missouri. The Hawks fell in each of the matchups by final scores of 4-3 and 2-0.
Northeast (1-5) knew the challenge would come with five of their first six opponents on the schedule being nationally ranked, with the next three challengers on their schedule also being ranked, but the Hawks have continued to put up strong fights early this season. Northeast jumped out to an early 3-0 advantage over the Wildcats on Friday before Pearl River eventually ran down the Hawks despite Alana Gordon (Cibolo, Texas) scoring the first goal of her collegiate career in the match.
On Sunday, Northeast stayed with Holmes throughout much of the showdown but couldn't find a goal that would pull them closer in the contest. The Hawks have fallen to the No. 5 and No. 3 teams in the nation by just a combined three goals, and despite having a few losses on their schedule they remain nationally ranked with the start of conference play nearing.
STAT SHET AGAINST PEARL RIVER:
Goals: Alana Gordon (Cibolo, Texas), Hailey Holbrook (Broomfield, Colo.) - 2
Assists: Helena Chetcuti (Melbourne, Australia), Madelynn Curry (Hugo, Minn.), Amelia Bingley (Melbourne, Australia)
HEAR FROM THE HAWKS COACH:
Head Women's Soccer Coach Chad Miller's overall thoughts after battling No. 15 Pearl River:
"I feel like we finally got a glimpse of what this team is capable of," Miller said. "We know it's there, now we just need to harness it and take it to the next game. We have to find our consistency so we can take that momentum into region play."
Miller after the contest with No. 3 Holmes:
"We cannot focus on just wins and losses at this point," Miller said. "Our of our six games so far, five of them are against ranked teams. We have to keep our focus on whether or not we are making our game better and staying consistent. The big games are coming, and those are the ones we need to be ready for."
UP NEXT:
The Hawks will compete against No. 7 Heartland Community College at 2 p.m. on Thursday in Normal, Illinois.
