JONES AND WIEDERIN COMBINE FOR 45 POINTS AS HAWKS DOWN REIVERS

NORFOLK, Neb. – The Northeast Community College women's basketball team returned home for the final time during the first semester in a showdown with Iowa Western Community College at the Cox Activities Center in Norfolk Saturday. The Hawks jumped all over the visiting Reivers and were victorious by a final score of 78-53.

The Hawks (10-3, 3-2 ICCAC) were dominant in every quarter except the second as they led 22-15 after the first quarter but were tied 35-35 with Iowa Western at the halftime break. Northeast got going in the second half as the Reivers were held to just 18 points in the final two quarters and the Hawks took what was an even game at halftime and pulled away to secure a 25-point victory. Aaliyah Jones (Rapid City, S.D.) and Mia Wiederin (Norfolk, Neb.) combined for 45 points as Northeast will now turn around and play on the road against Iowa Lakes Community College in just two days.

HEAR FROM THE HAWKS COACH:

Head Women's Basketball Coach Matt Svehla on the big victory tonight:

"We got off to a really good start," Svehla said. "Then I thought our execution and our defense both left us at the same time and Iowa Western got back in it. Tie game at halftime, so it was anyone's ballgame. I thought we did a better job on the defense end in the second half to get control of the game again. We had some people step up who maybe aren't always big in the scoring column for us, and that always helps when you have some balance like that."

Svehla on heading to Iowa Lakes on Monday:

"One game left here before our winter break and it's on the road," Svehla said. "It will be a tough environment on the road at Iowa Lakes. They are always a competitive, well-coached basketball team. We will have to stay focused and play good basketball Monday night."

The Hawks will hit the road for their final game before winter break and will take on Iowa Lakes Community College at 5:30 p.m. Monday in Estherville, Iowa.
