NORTHEAST WOMEN’S BASKETBALL BATTLES HARD WITH NO. 1 KIRKWOOD

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – The Northeast Community College women's basketball team was on the road in Cedar Rapids, Iowa Saturday for a duel with No. 1 Kirkwood Community College. The Eagles got the best of the Hawks by a final score of 70-56.

The Hawks (6-4) were led in scoring by Allison Richards (Pine Ridge, S.D.), who tallied 14 points off the bench. Northeast led the team voted on as the best in the land 15-12 at the end of the first quarter. At halftime, Kirkwood held a slim 34-29 advantage.

The Eagles began to find their groove and led by 17 points at the end of the third quarter. Back-to-back 3-pointers from Richards in the fourth quarter cut the Kirkwood lead to just nine with 2:38 remaining in the contest, but the edge they had built up ultimately proved to be too much of a hill to climb.

Head women's basketball coach Matt Svehla on the battle Saturday against No. 1:

"We played okay at times, but we lacked consistency on both ends of the court," Svehla said. "Playing on the court against a tough opponent is not easy, but hopefully this can give us something to learn and grow from."

Northeast will return home Wednesday to take on Des Moines Area Community College at 5:30 Wednesday at the Cox Activities Center in Norfolk.
