CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Northeast Community College women's basketball player Ashley Hassett (Hershey, Neb.) was named a Third Team All-American Tuesday by the NJCAA for her efforts during the 2021-2022 season. Hassett had previously been announced as a First Team All-Region selection by the ICCAC after leading the conference in scoring during her sophomore season.
Hassett averaged 20.5 points per game, 9.7 rebounds per game and 2.5 steals per game through the entire campaign. She was the leading scorer in the ICCAC and ended the year scoring 635 points on the season, which was the third-most points in Division II NJCAA Women's Basketball. She also led the nation in free throws made with 231 and pulled down the seventh-most rebounds in the country with 300 total.
When Hassett first learned of the honor her mind quickly flashed back to the many goals that she had made for herself in the offseason.
"I was very excited," Hassett said. "It was one thing that I had written on my board. One of my goals. I looked at my board today and last night and I was like, 'I did it!' I'm excited about that."
Northeast Head Women's Basketball Coach Matt Svehla was thrilled to learn that Hassett had been recognized by the NJCAA.
"It's a great honor," Svehla said. "She's put in a lot of work. She put up really good numbers. Obviously, a key player for us. It's always rewarding for a player to reap the benefits of their labor, so to speak. Great accomplishment."
There are a few individuals who Hassett wanted to be sure and thank for helping her along the way.
"My coaches, my trainers, my parents and the people that have been around me this whole time," Hassett said. "Everyone that's been there since day one and believed in me. I'll remember all the people that helped me and stood by my side."
Hassett has also been a valuable piece to the Northeast campus as a whole.
"Very good person," Svehela said. "Competes. Good personality. Good teammate. Just gives effort on and off the court. I think she's a very good representative of our college, an ambassador for the women's basketball program and how to be a student-athlete as well."
Hassett joins three other players from the ICCAC who were named All-Americans, as Ashley Tull and Kortney Drake from Kirkwood Community College also appeared on the list
"That shows it's a very tough league," Svehla said. "To be a player named as one of those three is a great honor."
Hassett knows there is a challenge that lies ahead with wherever her basketball journey takes her next, but she is prepared to face those obstacles head-on.
"I'm excited to go to the next level," Hassett said. "The competitiveness will be another level up."
