Early lead not enough for Northeast women’s basketball

NORFOLK, Neb. – Despite taking a 17-point lead after the first quarter, the Northeast Community College women's basketball team couldn't find its groove on Tuesday, falling to Southeast Community College, 64-54 at the Cox Activities Center in Norfolk.

After holding the Storm to 22 percent shooting from the field at the end of the first quarter, the Hawks (3-5) allowed 20 points in the second quarter and 22 in the third. The Hawks could only muster 21 total points in each respective quarter.

Both teams traded baskets in the third quarter as the Hawks' lead began to slip away. The Hawks wouldn't go down without a fight after a made jumper from Ashley Hassett (Hershey, Neb.) that cut the Southeast lead to four points early in the fourth quarter. The Hawks went scoreless for nearly five minutes, until Autumn Dickmander (Brule, Neb.) hit a 3-pointer with 24 seconds to play, but it ultimately wasn't enough.

Hassett led the Hawks with a double-double as she tallied 19 points and 10 rebounds, while Molly Davis (Yutan, Neb.) had 12 points.

The Hawks battle Cloud County Community College at 2 p.m. Saturday in Concordia, Kan.
