SPENCER, Iowa – The No. 3 Northeast Community College men's soccer team traveled Wednesday to Spencer, Iowa for a matchup with No. 7 Iowa Lakes Community College in the semifinals of the Region 11 Tournament. The Hawks fell in the showdown by a final score of 4-1.
Northeast (14-4-1, 6-2-1 ICCAC) and the Lakers have competed on big stages many times over the last three seasons as the two teams have faced off in two different Region 11 Tournament Championships, the final four at the 2023 NJCAA DII Men's Soccer Championship and have both claimed a national title over the course of the last two years. The two squads entered the halftime break tied at 0-0, but a flurry of goals in the second half from Iowa Lakes were enough to bounce the Hawks from the tournament.
It will now be a waiting game for Northeast as they are still eligible to receive one of four at-large bids to the 2025 NJCAA DII Men's Soccer Championship at Stryker Sports Complex in Wichita, Kansas. In Region 11, the conference where the Hawks reside, five teams are currently ranked in the top 13 of the national polls. Northeast defeated No. 7 Iowa Lakes, No. 8 Pearl River Community College, No. 9 CCBC Essex and No. 18 Iowa Central Community College during the regular season and played to a draw against No. 5 Southeastern Community College.
The selection show for the national tournament will take place on Tuesday, November 11 and the Hawks will have to wait until then to see if their resume will be deemed enough by the selection committee to defend their 2024 national title.
