Northeast men’s soccer grabs first win of the season; drops second game to ranked foe

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Northeast Community College men's soccer team (1-1) picked up its first win of the season on Saturday, topping ASA College of Miami 2-0 in Daytona Beach, before dropping a close 1-0 match against No. 8-ranked Daytona State College on Sunday.

In the victory over ASA College of Miami, Victor Galterio (Pedreira, Sao Paulo, Brazil) scored both goals for the Hawks in the first period.

"This was two talented teams going after a win," Head Coach Chad Miller said. "ASA Miami is a talented squad, so this was a very strong win for the boys. We really passed the ball well and created opportunities. In the first half, Victor received a pass from Nickolas Gama that split the defenders and Victor took it in for the score. I felt we had the edge in play in the first half."

In the final game of the trip, the Hawks allowed just one goal in the 55th minute, but were unable to capitalize with a goal of their own.

"This was a great game," Miller added. "Daytona State is worthy of their ranking and they tested every aspect of our game. I felt we did a great job moving the ball, but Daytona did a good job of causing us problems going forward and really tested our back line on defense. Goalie Massimiliano Simonazzi had some great saves along with the defense coming up big to keep us in the game. This was a great marker for this squad, giving them confidence to know they can play with top teams."

The Falcons out-shot the Hawks 14-2 in the contest. Simonazzi tallied seven saves in the hard-fought loss for Northeast.

The Hawks battle Central Community College-Columbus at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Norfolk Veteran's Memorial Field in Norfolk. Live stream will be available at: https://team1sports.com/northeastcc/
