BORGMANN COMES UP CLUTCH TWICE DURING SOPHOMORE WEEKEND FOR NORTHEAST

NORFOLK, Neb. – The Northeast Community College baseball team was back at Norfolk Veterans Memorial Baseball Field in Norfolk Saturday and Sunday for three showdowns with North Iowa Area Community College. The Hawks took Game 1 by a final score of 7-6, dropped Game 2, 6-2 and then took a 13-11 victory in Game 3 on Sunday.

Northeast (31-25, 16-16 ICCAC) honored sophomores Carter Noakes (Dannebrog, Neb.), Jack Borgmann (Norfolk, Neb.), Tristen Beyer (North Platte, Neb.), Trenton Barry (Wahoo, Neb.), Ian Shaw (Ogallala, Neb.), Kale Jensen (Central City, Neb.), Haiden Magnussen (Pierce, Neb.), Oakland Flodell (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan), Caleb Lanphear (Gretna, Neb.), JT Roy (Elkhorn, Neb.), Cooper Tessendorf (Columbus, Neb.), Greysen Strauss (Lexington, Neb.) and Braden Cork (Omaha, Neb.) between games Saturday as part of Sophomore Day in what was the final home series of the regular season.

Caden Rezac (Ogallala, Neb.) was strong on the mound during his start in Game 1 as the freshman tossed three innings, allowed two hits, two runs and struck out five batters. The contest originally scheduled for seven innings moved to extra frames and remained tied until Jack Borgmann walked off the Trojans with a single to center field. The hit capped what was a massive outing as the Hawks sophomore picked up three RBIs and three hits in the ballgame.

Game 2 was a pitchers duel as neither of the two sides gave up a single run through the first five innings. Cole Kuszak (Broomfield, Colo.) allowed just one hit during his start and struck out three Trojans batters while Brady Fitzpatrick (Bellevue, Neb.) grabbed the lone RBI for Northeast.

On Sunday, runs came fast and furious as the two sides combined to score 24 different times. Trenton Barry blasted a homer and a double while Fitzpatrick tallied two more RBIs. The Hawks trailed by one run entering the eighth inning but Borgmann continued his big weekend with a double to score two. One more run scored from a NIACC error and Braden Cork sealed the deal in the ninth to give Northeast the series victory.

The Hawks will get things started in the double elimination Region 11 Tournament on Thursday with a matchup against Kirkwood Community College at 3:30 p.m. Thursday at Merchants Park in Carroll, Iowa.

HEAR FROM THE HAWKS COACH:

Head Baseball Coach Marcus Clapp on what he will remember about his sophomore class:

"They've won a lot of games," Clapp said. "They've done some good things and hopefully they want to keep winning, keep getting after it and we find a way to make a run in the postseason."

Clapp on the big weekend from Jack Borgmann:

"Jack has been really good this whole year," Clapp said. "He's been clutch for us. He's had a really good year offensively and defensively. He is just a really good player, and someone is going to get a really good kid and player when he leaves here. Big hit again for us and a good win to end it."

Clapp on his message to his group as postseason play begins next:

"Now it doesn't matter," Clapp said. "I told the guys after the game that nothing matters and now it's go time. It's the tournament. Now all the work you put in, the weights, the early mornings, the practices are all worth it. Our goal was to make the tournament and now we are there. Now it's time to play."
