RANGER, Texas – The Northeast Community College baseball team traveled to Ranger, Texas Saturday and Sunday for a three-game set with Southeast Community College on the campus of Ranger College. The Hawks fell in Game 1 by a final score of 3-1 before they were victorious in both Game 2 and Game 3 by final scores of 12-8 and 4-2 to win their first series of the young season.

Northeast (3-4) was given a strong start on the mound from Braden Cork (Omaha, Neb.) in Game 1 as the sophomore tossed four innings and struck out six different batters from the Bobcats to get the weekend going. Kye Privett (Papillion, Neb.) had two hits and an RBI in the matchup, but the Hawks surrendered two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to drop what was a pitcher's duel.

The offense for the Hawks got going in Game 2 of the series as Privett continued his big day with three RBIs, Edgar Hernandez (Glenwood Springs, Colo.) added two of his own while Kale Jensen (Central City, Neb.), Brady Fitzpatrick (Bellevue, Neb.) and Hayden Parrish (Omaha, Neb.) all picked up one RBI in the showdown. Cole Kuszak (Broomfield, Colo.) put in an excellent start on the mound for Northeast as he completed four innings without giving up a single earned run to secure a split of the day.

On Sunday, the pitching for the Hawks was the story as two Columbus, Nebraska natives in Preston Hastreiter (Columbus, Neb.) and Cooper Tessendorf (Columbus, Neb.) each tallied eight strikeouts. Hastreiter pitched five innings and allowed just two hits while Tessendorf didn't surrender a single hit in 3.2 innings of work.

    HEAR FROM THE HAWKS COACH:

Head Baseball Coach Marcus Clapp on Saturday against Southeast:

"I thought we showed some fight, but we can't put ourselves in that situation," Clapp said. "We had way too many free bases and a couple errors that hurt us all day. It was good to get a split, but we need to clean things up."

Clapp on the weekend as a whole, Game 3 against the Bobcats and preparations to hit the road again next weekend:

"It was good for us to get on the field again and play," Clapp said. "Both Preston Hastreiter and Cooper Tessendorf threw very well! They pumped the zone and got ahead. We will get back this week and continue to work."

    UP NEXT:

The Hawks will return to the road and will battle Butler Community College in a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. Saturday in El Dorado, Kansas.
