NORFOLK, Neb. – The Northeast Community College baseball team began their three-game set with Southeastern Community College Saturday at Norfolk Veterans Memorial Baseball Field in Norfolk. The Hawks captured both matchups by final scores of 3-2 and 2-0.

Northeast (35-14, 19-8 ICCAC) surrendered two runs in the top of the first inning but got one back in the bottom half of the frame courtesy of a Kaden Young (Columbus, Neb.) sacrifice fly. Both starting pitchers then settled in as a pitcher's duel ensued. The next run from either side didn't come until the bottom of the sixth inning when Harrison Taubert (Casper, Wyo.) launched a leadoff triple to the wall and then Derek Woolwine (Boulder, Colo.) brought him in with a single to tie the showdown. Darius Hagen (Omaha, Neb.) later scored off an error in the frame and Gage Ingram (LaVitsa, Neb.) closed out the contest in the seventh to secure the victory.

Game 2 was more of the same in terms of not many runs for either squad as Clay Beaumont (Tekamah, Neb.) was dominant on the mound for the Hawks. Beaumont tossed more than seven innings and allowed just three hits, no earned runs and struck out eight Blackhawks batters. Northeast got on the board in the bottom of the second inning as Tom Shakespeare (Caberra, Australia) grounded out to second base to score Taubert. The Hawks went on to add insurance in the bottom of the sixth frame as Taubert doubled to plate Cade Grevengoed (West Des Moines, Iowa). Those two runs were plenty as Ingram shut down Southeastern again in relief to sweep the day.

    HEAR FROM THE HAWKS COACH:

Head baseball coach Marcus Clapp on the performances from his starting pitchers today:

"Both of them threw really well," Clapp said. "That's two outings in a row that (Christian Carew) has thrown really well. He got himself in trouble in the first and then after that he held them down and locked in. Clay obviously didn't give up a run. Gage came in both games and closed it out. We pitched extremely well against a very good team."

Clapp on the keys to pulling off the sweep Sunday:

"Come out again like we did today," Clapp said. "Hopefully Nate (Zyzda) can throw well again tomorrow. It's going to be a very similar day. It's going to be a little colder and the wind is going to be the same. We just have to show up and I know the guys are ready to take care of a sweep. We are going to be ready to go."

    UP NEXT:

The Hawks will finish their series with No. 7 Southeastern Community College at 1 p.m. tomorrow at Norfolk Veterans Memorial Field in Norfolk.
