NORFOLK, Neb. – The Northeast Community College baseball team hosted Des Moines Area Community College in their final home game of the season at Norfolk Veterans Memorial Baseball Field in Norfolk Wednesday. The Hawks eventually were able to come out on top of the Bears by a final score of 13-5.

The Hawks (37-15, 17-13 ICACC) tied the school record for wins in a season on Wednesday, but it didn't come easy. The Bears and Hawks traded the lead many times throughout the day and were even on the scoreboard after the first, second and sixth innings. A real turning point in the game came when Creighton Silvain (Omaha, Neb.) entered the contest with the bases loaded in the top of the seventh inning and escaped without surrendering a run.

Zane Zielinski (Chicago, Ill.), Samuel Manwarren (Overland Park, Kan.), Maxim Fullerton (Steamboat Springs, Colo.), Harrison Taubert (Casper, Wyo.) and Taylor Gill (Orem, Utah) all blasted homers for the Hawks as Northeast finished their home portion of the schedule on a high note.

    STAT SHEET

Maxim Fullerton (Steamboat Springs, Colo.): 3-5, HR, 4 RBIs, R

Zane Zielinski (Chicago, Ill.): 4-5, HR, 3 RBIs, 3 R

    HEAR FROM THE HAWKS COACH

Head baseball coach Marcus Clapp's overall thoughts on today's game:

"It's nice to finish at home on a high note on a day where we honored the sophomores," Clapp said. "I thought we pitched well. We gave ourselves a chance. When we give ourselves a chance and our offense does what it's capable of, that shows right there today what we are capable of doing. Now we just have to go put it together consistently, but I thought our guys did a really good job. We had about three innings where we got away from our approach and that's what happens. When we stick together, we're alright."

Clapp's thoughts on this team tying the school record for wins in a season with a chance to add more:

"We've got a lot of guys that have done a lot of things for this program," Clapp said. "We are going to have some new records broken when the year is over. It just shows that when they won 37 games as a freshman class and come back to win 37 with a chance to win more, it's a pretty special sophomore class. They've done a lot for our program and I appreciate everything that they've done."

How will Clapp remember this sophomore class?

"High character," Clapp said. "They do what they are supposed to do off the field. They've worked hard on the field and that's why you have an opportunity to win 70-plus games. You can't say enough about who they are as people, and their character off the field is second to none also."

    UP NEXT

The Hawks will finish the regular season with three games against North Iowa Area Community College. A doubleheader is schedule to begin at 1 p.m. Saturday in Mason City, Iowa.
