NORFOLK, Neb. – The No. 18 Northeast Community College baseball team finished their series with Indian Hills Monday at Norfolk Veterans Memorial Baseball Field in Norfolk. Northeast was able to prevail by a final score of 7-4 over the Warriors in the series finale.

The Hawks (35-11, 15-9 ICCAC) used eight different pitchers in the matchup and none of those arms allowed more than two hits. Zane Zielinski (Chicago, Ill.) got the scoring going for the Hawks as he blasted his fourth home run of the season in the fourth inning. The Hawks trialed 3-1 after four and a half innings but singles from Zielinski and Harrison Taubert (Casper, Wyo.) gave the Hawks a lead that they would never look back from.

An RBI from Parker Dorrance (Arvada, Colo.) and a dropped ball in the outfield gave the Hawks two more additional insurance runs in the seventh inning that they ultimately wouldn't even need.

    STAT SHEET

Zane Zielinski (Chicago, Ill.): 3-4, HR, 3 RBI, 3 R

Taylor Gill (Orem, Utah): 2-3, 2B, RBI, 2 R, BB

Harrison Taubert (Casper, Wyo.): 1-4, RBI

    Garrett Dudley (Johnstown, Colo.): 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, K

    HEAR FROM THE HAWKS COACH

Head baseball coach Marcus Clapp's thoughts on the Hawks having a smooth ballgame today:

"That's exactly what I was talking about yesterday," Clapp said. "The little things. Today we did the little things right. We played defense. Early I thought with the wind we had too many fly balls and that wasn't going to cut it. We started staying through the ball a little bit. I thought our pitchers threw well. Had a couple walks that cost us a couple of runs, but again that's just staying within ourselves and finding a way to win."

What Clapp wants his team's mindset to be with only nine games left and the ICCAC standings close and compact:

"I kind of feel like we control where we're going to be," Clapp said. "In this league you can't expect someone to lose or expect someone to win because it's just so tough. There are teams at the bottom of the league that are going to beat teams at the top of the league. Every week you have to bring it. It's going to be tough. We've got nine games left against teams that are already with us. If we stick with our approach and don't try and do too much, we'll give ourselves a chance to be in a spot where we need to at the end."

    UP NEXT

The Hawks will hit the road to take on Des Moines Area Community College for the first time this season. A doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. Wednesday in Boone, Iowa.
