CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – The No. 8 Northeast Community College baseball team hit the road to battle No. 11 Kirkwood Community College Saturday in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The Hawks and Eagles split the two ICCAC matchups, with the Hawks taking Game 1 by a final score of 3-2 and the Eagles coming out on top in Game 2 by a final score of 26-1.

In Game 1, Preston Tenney (Parker, Colo.) added to his performances last week that earned him ICCAC conference player of the week honors as he tossed seven innings and only gave up four hits for the Hawks (29-5, 9-3 ICCAC). Cooper Whitt (Knoxville, Tenn.) came up huge for the Hawks as his solo shot over the wall in left field evened the contest at two in the seventh inning. The game was scheduled for only seven innings but headed to extra innings before Maximo De Leon (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) came through with an RBI triple in the top of the ninth frame. Creighton Silvain (Omaha, Neb.) closed the door in the bottom of the ninth inning to complete the comeback win for the Hawks.

Game 2 was a different story for the Hawks as they were held to just two hits and gave up six runs in the second inning before surrendering 10 runs in both the third and fourth innings.

    STAT SHEET GAME 1:

Cooper Whitt (Knoxville, Tenn.): 1-4, HR, 2 RBI

Maximo De Leon (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic): 1-4, 3B, RBI

    Preston Tenney (Parker, Colo.): 7 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 11 K, 3 BB

    Creighton Silvain (Omaha, Neb.): 2 IP, 0 H, 2 K, 2 BB

    STAT SHEET GAME 2:

Taylor Gill (Orem, Utah): 1-1, BB, SB

Maxim Fullerton (Steamboat Springs, Colo.): 1-1, RBI

    HEAR FROM THE HAWKS COACH:

Head baseball coach Marcus Clapp's overall thoughts on the Hawks comeback in Game 1:

"Well, Preston Tenney was phenomenal and had all his stuff working," Clapp said. "It was unfortunate that he didn't get the win in that game, but (Creighton) Silvain came in and did a really good job to close it out. Cooper (Whitt) with obviously the big hit to keep us alive."

Clapp's thoughts about bouncing back after Game 2 as Game 3 nears tomorrow:

"Game 2 was ugly, but it is what it is," Clapp said. "We have a chance to win another series and we will come ready to play."

    UP NEXT:

The Hawks will battle No. 11 Kirkwood Community College in the rubber match of the series tomorrow. The game is scheduled to begin at 12 p.m. tomorrow in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
