NO. 10 HAWKS PULL OFF SATURDAY SWEEP OF SOUTHWESTERN

NORFOLK, Neb. – The No. 10 ranked Northeast Community College baseball team took on Southwestern Community College Saturday for a doubleheader in what were their first ICCAC matchups of the season at Norfolk Veterans Memorial Baseball Field in Norfolk. Northeast came out on top in Game 1 by a final score of 6-2 and repeated that result in Game 2, winning 13-3.

Preston Tenney (Parker, Colo.) took the mound in Game 1 for the Hawks (22-3, 2-1 ICCAC) and pitched a gem of a game. Tenney only allowed one earned run on four hits before Dylan Rodgers (Norfolk, Neb.) came on to finish the ballgame. The Hawks threw two early runs up on the scoreboard in the first inning before adding another in the second and three more in the fifth to take home the victory.

In Game 2 the bats for the Hawks came alive as they scored six runs in the first inning and five more runs in the second inning. Cooper Whitt (Knoxville, Tenn.) tallied three hits in the contest, including the game-clincher in the seventh inning to end the ball game.

HEAR FROM THE HAWKS COACH

Head baseball coach Marcus Capp's thoughts on how his starting pitchers performed today:

"We pitched better today," Clapp said. "(Preston) Tenney did a good job. With Chris (Mazzini), he gets the job done. He gave up two hits is all, but way too many walks again. He knows it. We just have to keep working and getting better. I thought we pitched well overall."

Clapp's overall thoughts on how his team performed at the plate offensively:

"Like we keep talking, when our guys stick with our approaches and we stay middle we're pretty good," Clapp said. "We score 11 runs early because we stick with our approach, and then we get away from that for four innings. That's just something we got done talking about. That has to be something that we do automatically."

Clapp's thoughts on facing Southwestern Community College again tomorrow for the series finale:

"We've got (Gage) Ingram on the mound," Clapp said. "If we just come out and do what we're capable of we're going to be fine."

UP NEXT

The Hawks will wrap up their three-game set with Southwestern Community College tomorrow. The game is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. Sunday at Norfolk Veterans Memorial Baseball Field in Norfolk.
