NORFOLK, Neb. – The Northeast Community College women's basketball team got off to a hot start on Friday, topping Des Moines Area Community College 102-61, before dropping a close contest to Iowa Lakes Community College 78-72 on Saturday in the Hawks Classic at the Cox Activities Center in Norfolk.
The Hawks (3-2) got off to a cruising start over DMACC, leading by 25 points at halftime. Northeast held the Bears to just 32 percent shooting from the field, while recording a 51 percent shooting effort from the field and 52 percent from three-point land.
Sophomore Irene Sanz (Vilassar de Mar, Spain) tallied 17 points on 7-of-15 shooting from the field. Newcomer Macey Kulhanek (Howells, Neb.) added 17 points off the bench in eight minutes of work, connecting on four 3-pointers. Freshman Kyla Moore (Norfolk, Neb.) chipped in 14 points and five boards, while Jade Blackburn (Surrey, England) had 11 points and seven rebounds. Eriana Brown (Des Moines, Iowa) rounded out the Hawks scoring with 10 points, six boards and four assists.
Saturday's match-up with the Lakers didn't go as planned for the Hawks.
The Iowa Lakes defense held Northeast to just 37 percent shooting from the field in the game. The Hawks held strong until the end, but couldn't capitalize on the 22 turnovers committed by Iowa Lakes.
Kori Fischer (South Sioux City, Neb.) led the Hawks with 14 points, four boards and four steals, while Moore added 11 points. Lauren Hunstad (Parker, S.D.) had 10 points, five rebounds and four steals.
Northeast hits the road to take on North Platte Community College at 5 p.m. Tuesday in North Platte, Neb.
