NORFOLK, Neb. – A 4-0 lead wasn't enough for the Northeast Community College softball team on Saturday in the first game of a doubleheader.
The Hawks (2-28, 0-12 ICCAC) fell 16-7 and 18-13 to Ellsworth Community College at Ta-Ha-Zouka Park in Norfolk.
Ellsworth tallied 14 runs in three innings to keep the Hawks searching for runs, despite receiving home runs from Maggie Berryman (Norfolk, Neb.), Lindsey Anderson (Dunlap, Iowa) and Regan Reicks (Dunlap, Iowa).
Madison McKewon (Springfield, Neb.) was dealt the loss in the first game, tossing three and two-thirds innings, allowing two earned runs off nine hits.
Two home runs from Berryman in the final game of the doubleheader couldn't seal the victory for Northeast. The Hawks led 11-9 until the Panthers added five runs in the top of the fifth.
McKewon took the loss, throwing three and one-thirds innings, giving up six earned runs off nine hits.
The Hawks hit the road to take on Kirkwood Community College at 2 and 4 p.m. tomorrow in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
