COLUMBUS, Neb. – After sweeping its in-state rival less than 24 hours ago, the Northeast Community College softball team found itself on the losing end on Friday night, falling to Central Community College 13-12 and 13-8 in Columbus, Neb.
A seven-run fifth inning seemed to seal the deal for the Hawks (2-12), but the Raiders added a run in the sixth and two more in the bottom of the eighth to walk-off Northeast in extra innings.
Rosario Garcia (Northglenn, Colo.) was 2-for-4 at the plate, with five RBI, two runs, a walk and a home run. Madison McKewon (Springfield, Neb.) went 2-for-4 with three runs, a double, a stolen base and a walk.
Freshman Lindsey Anderson (Dunlap, Iowa) was saddled with the loss, tossing five innings, allowing five earned runs off 12 hits.
The Hawks exploded for a four-run first inning, but the Raiders quickly responded with six runs in the bottom of the second. Northeast was unable to muster any offense in the latter innings as CCC pushed across a combined six runs in the bottom of the fourth and fifth innings. The game was ultimately shortened due to darkness.
Sydney Kelley (Omaha, Neb.) went 3-for-4 at the plate, adding three runs, two doubles and a stolen base. Garcia added a double and four RBI.
McKewon took the loss, throwing five innings, allowing seven earned runs off 14 hits.
The Hawks square off with Iowa Western Community College in a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Council Bluffs, Iowa.
