NORFOLK, Neb. – The Northeast Community College men's basketball team split two games at the annual Hawks Classic on Friday and Saturday. The Hawks topped Iowa Central Community College 87-80, before snapping a three-game win streak, falling to Iowa Lakes Community College 96-69 at the Cox Activities Center in Norfolk.
Leading 43-39 at half, the Hawks (3-2) went on to shoot 55 percent from the field in the second half, while holding the Tritons to 37 percent shooting from the field. Northeast was able to force 12 turnovers, keeping Iowa Central in check for much of the game.
Moses Byekwaso (London, United Kingdom) netted 28 points and six boards on 9-of-16 shooting from the field, including five 3-pointers. Joel Ufele (London, United Kingdom) added a double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds on 9-of-16 shooting. Emmette Page (Brooklyn Park, Minn.) had 18 points and five boards, while Seth Coatta (Minnetonka, Minn.) chipped in 13 points and six rebounds.
In the final game of the classic, Iowa Lakes did most of its damage in the first half, leading 50-15 at halftime. Northeast was unable to bounce back from the large deficit.
Coatta tallied 15 points and Ufele added 14 points in the loss.
The Hawks (3-2) visit York College JV on Tuesday at 7 p.m. in York, Neb.
