MILES CITY, Mont. – The Northeast Community College baseball team is headed to the NJCAA DII World Series for the first time in program history after defeating Miles Community College 11-4 and 8-4 in the North Plains District Championship Sunday in Miles City, Mont.
Down by a run after the first inning, the Hawks (34-18) managed two big innings to keep the Pioneers searching for runs. Northeast ultimately tallied two runs in the top of the third inning and four in the sixth.
Drew Smith (Elkhorn, Neb.) led the spark at the plate for the Hawks, going 2-for-4, with two runs, two RBI and a triple. Derek Botaletto (Omaha, Neb.) went 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI, while Mills Macek (Blair, Neb.) added a home run.
Lefty starter Cam Taylor (Bellevue, Neb.) grabbed his ninth win on the mound, tossing five and two-thirds innings, giving up four earned runs off three hits, while striking out seven batters and walking seven.
The Hawks scurried to a 6-1 after two innings in the final game of the series and never looked back.
Southpaw Andrew Shaw (Dillon, Colo.) took the win, allowing only three earned runs in six innings of work. Shaw also struck out six batters and walked three.
Smith did most of the damage at the plate, going 3-for-5, with three runs, three RBI and two home runs. Donovan Warren (Omaha, Neb.) added two hits and two RBI, while Jayden Sinju (Murray, Utah) belted a home run.
